The Inti Raymi or Sun Festival was the main festival of the Inca calendar. The importance given to the Inca culture since the last century has made it one of the most popular "traditional" festivals in Peru today. Its traditional character must be qualified in view of its prohibition by Spanish settlers that prevented its celebration for more than 4 centuries due to its political and religious implications. It owes its rebirth to Humberto Vidal Unda, historian, who, in 1944, took the initiative to organize a new theatrical representation of this central festival of the Inca ceremonial calendar.
