Tour Description

Referred to as the "sacred sister" of Machu Picchu, Choquequirao is an impressive Inca site that has yet to reveal its full beauty.

To this day only 30% of this site of monumental size has been cleared from the vegetation that engulfed it after it was deserted and left to slip into oblivion amid the tropical jungle of the Sacred Valley of the Inca.

How it fitted in the great Inca Empire is uncertain, reaching it, however, is sure to test your will. The Choquequirao trek is not the easiest of the hikes in the Sacred Valley region but it is the only way to access the majestic citadel sitting on the vertiginous slopes overlooking the Apurimac canyon.

Crossing the Apurimac river means going from the barren pass of Capuliyoc through tropical forests descending and ascending in changing landscapes and climates.

While it requires a good level of fitness, being able to enjoy this incredible marvel of Inca architecture without the crowds that are found in other popular places is an immense reward for your effort.
