Tour Description

This 4 day Amazon tour with Anavilhanas Lodge provides a comprehensive overview of the region, and with a carefully curated itinerary, blends the quintessential Amazonian experiences of piranha fishing and caiman spotting with more laid back and cultural activities.

Experience the Amazon's diverse landscape as you glide through black-water flooded forests on a wooden canoe, and hike on dryland forests while learning about the 80000 varieties of plants that grow in the region, some of them boasting powerful healing properties.

Travel along the Rio Negro and experience the Amazon from a cultural standpoint by meeting a local riverside community, visiting the home of a Caboclo, and taking part in the traditions of the Waimiri-Atroari tribe, just one of some 350 different ethnic groups in this vast region.

Stay at the Anavilhanas Lodge, 180 km from Manaus at the entrance of scenic Anavilhanas National Park, and retreat to one of 22 air-conditioned rooms to recharge at the end of each day, 2 of which are named the Panoramic Bungalows, and feature a glass wall that looks out to the Amazon jungle.

Unwind with a long soak in their outdoor pool that overlooks the free-flowing Rio Negro, or sip on a selection of caipirinhas and regional wines at the onsite bar after an exciting day of excursions.

Afternoon

After checking in at the lodge, begin your Amazon jungle tour by canoeing through the igapós and igarapés - the black-water flooded forests and gentle streams of the region, and revel in the symphony of sounds as birds chirp melodically and howler monkeys call loudly from the treetop canopies above.

  • Dinner at the lodge

Day 2 CANOE ON RIO NEGRO, CABOCLO HOME, INDIGENOUS TRIBE, NIGHT BOAT SAFARI

Morning

Canoe along the Rio Negro and meet a local riverside community this morning. Visit the home of a Caboclo - a person of mixed indigenous Brazilian and European ancestry, and gain insight into their local customs and culture as you tour their residence.

Afternoon

Learn the way of life of the Waimiri-Atroari tribe, an indigenous group that calls the southeastern region of Roraima and the northeastern region of Amazonas home. Practice their traditional hunting technique with a bow and arrow, and sharpen your aim as you hit the targets.

Evening

After the sun sets, embark on a nighttime jungle safari with your naturalist guide to spot caimans - amphibious carnivores belonging to the alligator family. There are six distinctive species, with the Cuvier’s dwarf the smallest at barely 1 m long, and the black caiman the largest, at up to 4.5 m. Equipped with handheld searchlights, explore the riverbanks for these nocturnal creatures, and perhaps have the chance to also witness nighthawks, snakes, and sloths.

Overnight at the lodge.

Home to as many as 80,000 plant varieties, you'll also learn about the healing properties of medicinal plants, how the people of the Amazon use them to treat common ailments, and its role in modern medicine today.

Afternoon

Depending on conditions, spend the afternoon piranha fishing or exploring the igapó:

Piranha Fishing: As you glide along igarapés in a wooden canoe, try your hand at the bucket list Amazonian activity of piranha fishing. Bearing razor teeth, the piranha is a freshwater fish indigenous to the Amazon basin.
