Tour Description

This Total Solar Eclipse Tour in Chile presents astronomy buffs with a rare opportunity to view this year's event from some of the world's clearest skies in Araucanía Region and combines the experience with discovering the nation's urban and natural attractions. This 6-day Chile tour begins with a visit to the cosmopolitan capital of Santiago, where you'll tour the government offices and historic landmarks to gain an understanding of the country's colorful past and cultural identity. See the city from above as you stand atop San Cristóbal Hill before catching a domestic flight and making your way south to the Araucanía Region. Forming part of the Lake District, this naturally spellbinding region boasts a rugged landscape of vast variety, ranging from the jagged shorelines of the Pacific Ocean to the active volcanic peaks and lofty summits of the Andes Mountains. In Temuco, dive into the history and cultural traditions of the Mapuche, the indigenous inhabitants of south-central Chile, and tour the sights of this storied city. Then witness the total solar eclipse in Pucón or near Freire, and experience darkness in the day as the moon briefly passes in front of the sun - an otherworldly experience that proves monumentally difficult to fathom. Discover more of the Araucanía Region by visiting Curacautin, Malalcahuello, and Lonquimay, and hike with your guide through the dense coigüe and oak filled forests of Reserva Nacional Malalcahuello-Nalcas to a viewpoint of Llaima and Lonquimay volcanoes. Beginning and ending in vibrant Santiago, this Chile tour presents an experience that seamlessly blends historic traditions with the urban delights and natural attractions of this South American nation.

Itinerary

Day 1 ARRIVAL IN SANTIAGO, CITY-TOUR

Morning

Meet and greet your private English speaking guide upon arriving at Santiago International Airport, and transfer to your downtown hotel to drop off your luggage.

Dynamic and cosmopolitan, the capital of Chile enjoys a picturesque location at the foot of the Andes, its snow-capped peaks a dramatic backdrop for Santiago's 32 distinct autonomous municipalities. Each embodying its own unique characteristics, Santiago embraces you with diversity as you discover neighborhoods dedicated to sophisticated art galleries, energetic nightlife and a burgeoning food scene, and historic downtown where you're invited to learn about the country's history from its collection of museums and government buildings. As the cultural and economic heart of Chile, Santiago presents you with a sound introduction to the nation.

Afternoon

After you've settled at the hotel, embark on a private city tour with your guide. Start at La Moneda, inaugurated in 1805 as Chile's royal mint before serving as the seat of the president, and take in the building's elegant neoclassical facades. Tour La Moneda's inner courtyards, one of which is flanked by two 18th century canons at its entrance. Relive the 1973 military coup when Augusto Pinochet violently took power for 17 years, then continue to Plaza de Armas - the bustling heart of the city surrounded by government offices and historical buildings. Tour the Central Post Office and the Metropolitan Cathedral, and continue to the Central Market, which offers an extensive variety of fresh produce. Along the Parque Forestal, make your way to San Cristóbal Hill, Santiago's second-highest point, to admire a bird's eye view of the city.

Evening

Enjoy the evening at leisure.

Overnight at your hotel in Santiago.

Day 2 FLIGHT TO TEMUCO: CITY TOUR, CIERRO NIELOL, LA PATAGUA

Morning

Transfer to Santiago International Airport this morning for your flight to Temuco, your first destination in the wildly scenic Araucanía Region of southern Chile.

Afternoon

With your guide, spend the afternoon touring Temuco, a destination deeply rooted in the history of its indigenous inhabitants - the Mapuche.

Present-day Patagonia now encompasses the Kingdom of La Araucanía, a state founded in 1860 by the Mapuche. Begin with a visit to Cerro Ñielol, a popular hilltop for sweeping panoramic views of the city below, and discover La Patagua, the very site where the Mapuche ceded their territory to the people who founded Temuco in 1881. An urban oasis, Cerro Ñielol is carpeted in lush oak and bay trees, and the bright pink copihue - Chile's national flower, making this a favorite picnic spot among visitors. Continue to Plaza Anibal Pinto, Temuco's main square, and take in the action at Feria Libre Pinto, a marketplace where small scale farmers from all corners of the region converge to offer their fresh produce. End your tour of Temuco at the neighboring historic train station.
