Day 11 TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK

The Torres del Paine National Park is located between the Andean Cordillera and the Patagonian Steppe, and gets its name from 3 granite spires: Las Torres (the Towers). The park is home to four different vegetation zones: Patagonian steppe, Pre-Andean shrubland, Magellanic subpolar forests, and the Andean desert – throughout which you will find unique landscapes, with turquoise lakes, lagoons, waterfalls and impressive glaciers. Archeological proof indicates that the zone was once permanently inhabited during millenaries (from the 6 th to the 5 th millenary BCE), by people that belonged to the ancient hunting tribes of the pampas, Tehuelches’ ancestors. We have indeed found signs of presence along the Sarmiento Lake and Serrano River banks. After these primitive hunters came the Aonikenk Nomads between 1500 and 1870, who were Tehuelches living south of the Chubut river. The Tehuelches always had a very extended knowledge of the mountain-range that they would call Paine or Carrón, and for which they had deep respect.

Regular shared transfer (to/from your hotel) to the pier, and regular shared sailing to the Balmaceda & Serrano glaciers (with a bilingual English-Spanish guide).

This fjord crossing will take you towards the top of the Balmaceda (2035m), at the bottom of which it seems as if a huge waterfall froze thousands of years ago: this is the Balmaceda Glacier.
It is quite impressive to listen to the cracking ice, which breaks off and falls into the otherwise calm motionless fjord. The landscape is a unique mix of green areas, covering the hills and mountains, and of turquoise water that seems to blend into the impressive glaciers. During the cruise, you will be able to see sea lions and cormorants. Then, you will top and get off of the boat for a short 1km walk, across a forest of native trees, to reach the bottom of the Serrano Glacier, and appreciate this magnificent work of nature.

Always a magnet for European immigrants, Valparaíso mushroomed during its golden age, when the city was known by international sailors as “Little San Francisco” or “The Jewel of the Pacific.” The UNESCO declared World Human Heritage in 2003.
