Trip details

Meet and greet with your guides at Iquitos airport. Transfer with your private vehicle to Nauta where you will board the cruise ship Zafiro. Along the way, as you drive through the 'terra firma' (the non-flooded forest) you will discover various aspects of the daily jungle life.

Nauta is a small riverside town on the banks of the Marañon River and was the first city founded in the Loreto region. At our private port in Nauta, you will get a VIP welcome aboard your vessel where you will be shown to your stylish suite by our professional crew.

As the Zafiro sails off, take time to relax and enjoy the fantastic panoramic views from the elegantly fitted observation area on the third deck. Your bartender will be waiting with an exotic cocktail made with regional fruits and pisco, Peru's beloved drink.

Over the next three days, the Zafiro will sail along the largest tributaries of the Amazon River and on the mighty Amazon itself, towards remote destinations visited by only a few of even the world’s most adventurous travelers.

Before dinner, attend a brief safety drill and then head to the airconditioned lounge to meet the cruise director and your naturalist guides who will give you a general overview of the itinerary, the activities en route, the wildlife and vegetation to keep an eye out for, as well as geographical and historical background of the area.

Welcome Dinner at 8.00 pm. Try one of the fine South American wines on board while savoring the deliciously fresh Amazonia-flavored cuisine.

  • Lunch at DoubleTree by Hilton
  • Dinner onboard

After breakfast, hop on the ship's motored skiff to cruise along an amazing black water stream through the Amazon flooded forest. Explore what scientists call a 'gallery forest' as a reference to the natural tunnel created by the narrow vegetation. As you glide through this tunnel, your guides will help you spot parrots, macaws and fluffy monk saki monkeys in the trees along the riverbanks.

On your way back to the Zafiro you will explore the Tapiche River and begin your guided jungle walk to learn about medicinal plants, search for insects, snakes, birds and more. Here, deep in the primary rainforest, your guides will identify the fruit trees and medicinal plants that make the largest natural pharmacy in the world. Return to the Zafiro followed by lunch.

Dorado River Exploration and Night Excursion. At 4 pm, the skiff will take you through the 'Mirrored Forest' where the reflection of giant trees dance on the surface of the black water river. Look out for enchanting parrots, blue-yellow macaws as well as the great variety of primates and sloths unperturbed by our presence. On your way back to the vessel, your guides will point out caimans and frogs in the water while fishing bats circle the skies.

Return to the Zafiro around 7.30 pm followed by a delicious dinner.

On this excursion you will also observe monkeys such as brown capuchin and saddle-back tamarins, birds such as fly catchers, trogons, wood peckers and more. Back on the Zafiro at 12 pm, you will begin to sail downstream toward Iquitos. Followed by lunch and siesta.

With your guide as interpreter you will stop for a cooking class in a native home where you will learn first-hand about Amazonian cuisine and open your taste buds to Amazonian culinary art. Return to the Zafiro. Back on board, the ship will continue to sail into the night toward Iquitos.

Important notes

If necessary, it is imperative to get your yellow fever vaccine at least ten days prior to departure.

Weather conditions in the Amazon rainforest vary greatly depending on the two seasons: the wet season from December to May and the dry season from June until November. Regardless of the season, you have to be prepared for rain throughout the year, although it rains a lot less during the dry season.

Both seasons provide amazing experiences with plenty of birds, wildlife and flora to see.  If you prefer cruising and watching scenery and wildlife from the vessel then we recommend traveling during the wet season. If you prefer hiking through the jungle, then we recommend traveling during the dry season.

Itineraries are subject to change due to weather conditions at certain times of the year. With the change in river water levels the sailing hours may vary. Excursions may be modified at the discretion of the crew.

Visits to the local villages are carefully planned to avoid a negative impact in their cultural identity.
