La Perla is a 138-foot long ship built in 2003 and fully refreshed in 2016. It is a highly comfortable vessel that offers perfect interaction with its surrounding environment as the shallow draught allows visits to locations inaccessible to many other boats. The outboard powered skiff can be used for many trips to lagoons, narrow channels, creeks and flooded forest otherwise inaccessible. More than 2000 species of birds, 7,300 species of flowering plants, 2,500 species of butterflies and many other reptiles and mammals coexist in the Peruvian Amazon to form an immense and overwhelming array of shapes and colors. A true work of art with nature as canvas and water and earth as media. Join this incredible journey through the Amazon river to discover the heart of the rainforest from a luxurious environment.

Itinerary

Day 1 SAIL THE MARAÑON AND UCAYALI RIVERS, NIGHT EXCURSION

Morning

Meet and greet with your guides at Iquitos airport. Transfer with your private vehicle to Nauta where you will board the cruise ship La Perla. After settling in your cosy cabin, your vessel will start sailing down the Marañon River to the point where it meets the Ucayali river to become the majestic Amazon river. Relax on the observation deck to enjoy the amazing panoramic views of the lush scenery.

Over the following days, your cruise will sail on the Marañon and Ucayali rivers as well as the Amazon where wildlife abounds on its many tributary streams.

Your guides will give you a general overview of the itinerary, the activities en route, the wildlife and vegetation to keep your eye out for, as well as geographical and historical background of the area. Feel free to ask any question about the cruise or your amazing environment.

Afternoon

After a gastronomical lunch on board, you will set off on your first excursion for wildlife spotting in the communal reserve of Yanayacu-Yacapana. Your guides will point out the biggest water plant in the world (Victorias Regias), various species of endemic birds and lizards, the peculiar sloths and the beautiful pink dolphins. After sundown, with the help of torches you guides will try to locate caimans, owls and capybaras.

Evening

On returning to your ship you will be welcome with live traditional music and a sumptuous dinner. To finish your evening, your guides will give an extended talk about the origins of the Amazon.

Wildlife spotting, bird watching in particular, is best done in the early hours of the day. On your hike you will be able to spot macaws, sloths, monkeys, toucans, trogons, quetzals, and parrots. Return to your ship for a delicious breakfast as the Perla sails to the Ucayali river.

Afternoon

On this morning's excursion you will explore a tributary river of the Uyucali. Along the Yarapa, walk among sloths, iguanas and other reptiles. Back on the ship, enjoy a delicious lunch and fill your lungs with the world's freshest air. In the afternoon, your guides will go over the cruise's itinerary and some of the species encountered during the day. Visit the butterfly farm project of Vista Alegre and learn about the amazing role of the Amazon butterflies in their ecosystem.

Evening

Go back on board for a delicious dinner and more exciting live music. Join tonight's adventurous excursion to spot some of the scarier residents such as caimans, snakes, tarantulas, scorpions, anacondas and the boisterous nocturnal monkeys. Important notes

If necessary, it is imperative to get your yellow fever vaccine at least ten days prior to departure.

Weather conditions in the Amazon rainforest vary greatly depending on the two seasons: the wet season from December to May and the dry season from June until November. Regardless of the season, you have to be prepared for rain throughout the year, although it rains a lot less during the dry season.

Both seasons provide amazing experiences with plenty of birds, wildlife and flora to see.  If you prefer cruising and watching scenery and wildlife from the vessel then we recommend traveling during the wet season. If you prefer hiking through the jungle, then we recommend traveling during the dry season.

Itineraries are subject to change due to weather conditions at certain times of the year. With the change in river water levels the sailing hours may vary. Excursions may be modified at the discretion of the crew.

Visits to the local villages are carefully planned to avoid a negative impact in their cultural identity.
